Psalm 37:16
16 Better the little that the righteous have than the wealth of many wicked;

ip man @ Friday, April 30, 2010 1:45 AM

Watching Ip Man 2 yesterday got me thinking about what it means to be a Chinese. I just mean, we all know that we’re descendants of China right. And what’s the Chinese (not restricted to China) spirit that we’re talking about. I believe like, many times, this spirit has been thwarted and maybe forgotten already. I’ve always been someone who truly loved martial arts, partly because of the cool display of skills and movements, but after watching the show yesterday. I realized what drew me in the most was the spirit of righteousness, modesty and diligence. All the martial arts, Chinese or not, ie TKD, Wushu, I believe deep down, it’s just a skill acquired. At best, it’s for self-defense, never meant to kill, never meant to hurt. Most importantly, it’s a refinement of your personal character through learning how to fight better, which I don’t know, people tend to forget this days. What’s the pint of knowing how to fight 100 people off your back, but you’re still a through scumbag.

This Chinese (probably you can say Asian) spirit attracted me because it allows people to be their best, but never being the best at the expense of others, which obviously the world forgot. They only want to show that they are the best, no matter how many people they are stepping on just to get on top. This is something which I totally detest and will get angry about. LOL. In the show, he said, 我并不是想证明中国武术比西洋武术好,或者多厉害,我只是想说,我们的身份和地位可能不同,但受尊重的权利是相同的

How many people could actually do that? When you’re up there, this damned superiority thing gets to you, causing you to think that you’re so damned good and you can kill anyone with just a finger. And the English translator in the show said that what IP man was trying to say is that, nobody’s dignity is worth less than the other person’s. How true. We’re all equal, if we’re all measure in terms of our dignity because we’re all human. I’m proud to be a Chinese because of the inventions that we have, because of guys like Ip Man, Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan. But that doesn’t mean I hate angmohs stuff, I do watch Amazing Race and Survivor and I really think they’re fantastic shows that I can’t live without. The tricky thing is to find the balance in believing that what you have is good, and that you see the good in what your other counterpart is doing and appreciate them for that. I can’t do it all the time either, but I’m learning how to. I know sometimes I might shoot some AT, which totally contradicts what I’m trying to say in this post. But no, that’s a misunderstanding. The purpose of this post is to show how I’m against stepping on others just to get on top. I believe we should always give some leeway to others, regardless of how much we hate them. Which is the spirit of Ip Man, and I feel which is the original Chinese spirit. So sometimes, when I see that this spirit is totally not in some AT, I’ll get pissed. And of course, sometimes end up saying not very nice stuff about them. Okay, I’m sorry. I’ll cut down on that. LOL. But then again, I’m proud to be a Chinese k. and I would die to be a fighter! J

And I wish I could have blogged this in Chinese, because it would have probably been 10000 times more impactful.
